ABOUT Springdell Studio
Springdell Studio was founded in 2022 in Melbourne. The name was inspired by Rivendell from The Lord of the Rings and a valley called Spring, located near the city where designer Hanqi Chen once lived. The studio’s first creative ideas were centered around flowers. Just like a spring valley in full bloom, the studio was born from this vision.
Springdell mainly uses two traditional craft techniques: silk flower making and Chan Hua. Both crafts come from long histories in China. The studio combines traditional handcraft skills with contemporary floral design. Each work shows delicate details, natural forms, and handmade artistry.
Chan Hua
Chan Hua (缠花)is a traditional Chinese craft. By using silk threads, metal wires, beads, and fabric to create floral decorations by hand. The process includes wrapping, twisting, shaping, and layering fine materials into flower forms.
People once wore Chan Hua during muti festivals, weddings, and important celebrations in China. The flowers carried wishes for beauty, happiness, and good fortune.
The studio combines traditional Chan Hua skills with modern design. The works bring together Chinese craftsmanship, contemporary fashion, and wearable art.

Silk Flower

Silk flower making is an old craft from China. The craft traveled to the West through the Silk Road. European nobles loved these flowers. People used them in haute couture fashion and luxury decoration. Later, the craft reached Japan and create lost of artists.
Hanki went to Japan and learned from Japan famous artists Sayoko.
Silk flower making uses silk, velvet, cotton fabric, floral wire, fabric dye, glue, and starch. These materials create soft textures and natural flower shapes. Traditional brass flower irons and molding tools shape each petal and leaf by hand. The process starts with drawing and cutting fabric pieces. The fabric then receives hand dye colors. Heated tools create curves and movement in the petals. Finally, the artist assembles each part into a complete flower.
